For the August long weekend this year the family decided to get together and plan a trip to Newfoundland. The first hike we did was Blackhead Path which is a short 3.5 km section along the much larger 300 km of the East Coast Trail.
The first 500 meters meanders through forest.
The trailhead
The trail then opens up to gorgeous views of the ocean and Signal Hill.
700 meters in, Signal Hill in the distance
For the next 900 meters the trail gets fairly steep and exposed with 65 meters of elevation gain. The terrain is rugged but the views are totally worth it.
Just before the lookout point we saw a juvenile bald eagle.
Selfie from the top… I don’t take good selfies.
From the top the next 1.8 km is very easy. For the most part it is downhill and any steep section is on boardwalks. Just make sure to hike a dry day and the wood won’t be slippery.
Cape Spear in the background.
Stay away from the coast. The ground is soft and unpredictable, but beautiful.
