Parry Sound: Elizabeth Island Lookout Trail

This is my favorite trail in Parry Sound. This trail was most likely made by cottagers hiking through the island. This trail can be done almost year round except when ice is just forming and melting. Boat launch in the winter. Park at George Hunt Memorial Boat Launch. There is free daily parking here. Overnight …

Parry Sound: Pikes Peak

5 degrees and sunny in February! If ever there was a day to get out and explore in the winter, today was a day I couldn't pass up! After recently being informed that my previous Pikes Peak journey was to Old Baldy I knew I had to remedy the situation. I was told to just …

Parry Sound: Balsam Trail

It has been to long since I've done a snowshoe day trip. It was 1°C outside today so I had to take advantage of that. The Balsam Trail is located just off Balsam Rd. in McKellar 20 minutes from downtown Parry Sound. The township does not clear the parking in the winter. Also, there is …

Parry Sound: Ice Caves on Big Whitefish Lake

If your looking for something to do for a few hours in the Parry Sound area during winter, I highly suggest checking out the ice caves on Big Whitefish Lake. They are much shorter than the ones on Boy Lake. Click the link to see the ones on Boy Lake https://ontarioadventurer.ca/2017/02/16/ice-caves-on-boy-lake/ . However, you can …

Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail

Whenever you can combine a great lookout with exposed Canadian Shield there seems to be a popular hike built around it. Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail is a prime example of this. Throughout the hike you are walking on top of the some of the worlds oldest rocks. In the winter the parking is along the …

Humphrey Barn and Nature Trails

In the spirit of trying to hike every trail around Parry Sound I can't believe I missed these ones. There are 5 trails here (4 completed) that are track set for cross country skiing in the winter and are open all year round. The barn at the start. Rabbit Run: This ~900 m loop is …

Waterfall Scavenger Hunt Part 1

June 23rd 2017 For a while I've looking for a place to throw in this short hike. After work one day I drove up to the Recolette Falls Trail in the French River Provincial Park. There is a short 3.2 km (round trip) trail. At the end of it there is a nice set of …

Hardy Lake Provincial Park

Hardy Lake Provincial Park is considered a non-operating park. There is no camping here, no visitor centre, but there is parking that is maintained in the winter. There are three trails here maintained by Muskoka Trails Council. We finally got a good dumping of snow! So in good fashion I suited up for a snowshoe …
